Exports up, sales down for Turkish auto sector

Based on the Turkey's Automotive Manufacturers Association (OSD) data, vehicle production and exports rose 15.1% and 40.2% in the first quarter of 2005 respectively. Despite the contraction in the domestic market, automotive market, which hit all-time-high last year, continues its way. Vehicle production rose 15.1% year on year to 199'655 units in the first three months. In other words, daily 2'218 units of vehicle were produced in Turkey. Vehicle exports rose 40.2% year on year to 140'750 units during Jan-Mar 2005 period while passenger car exports increased 23.8% to 78'521 units. In the aforementioned period, domestic vehicle sales dropped 16.3% year on year to 127'114 units while passenger car sales tumbled 25.9% to 70'716 units.
