EU-27 construction output down 4.1 percent in Jan from Dec

According to a report released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, in January this year the seasonally-adjusted production of the construction sector in the European Union member states (EU-27) decreased 4.1 percent as compared to December 2011 and was down by one percent compared to the same month of the previous year. In December, production decreased 3.8 percent compared to the previous month, according to the newly revised data.

Building construction in the EU-27 in January decreased by 4.6 percent month on month and was down 0.8 percent compared to January 2011, while civil engineering fell by 2.2 percent from December and was down by 1.4 percent as compared to the same month of 2011.

As compared to December, construction output in January increased in Slovenia by 17.4 percent, in Germany by 4.3 percent and in Portugal by 2.5 percent, while a decrease of 20.1 percent was registered in the Czech Republic, with a decrease of 13.8 percent in the UK and a 7.8 percent decline seen in Italy.
