In February this year, the flat steel imports of the European Union (EU) reached 1.331 million mt, while EU long steel imports amounted to 254,000 mt, as announced by the European Steel Association (EUROFER). Accordingly, overall EU finished steel imports in February totaled 1.589 million mt, up 6.44 percent month on month and up 36.16 percent compared to the same month of 2012.
In February, EU flat steel imports recorded their highest monthly volume since July 2011 when they had totaled 1.522 million mt. On the other hand, long steel imports fell only marginally compared to February 2012 following an almost 10 percent year-on-year rise in January.

In the first two months of the current year, the situation was quite similar to that witnessed in February, with flat steel imports up by close to 50 percent and with long product imports indicating just a slight variation, both year-on-year. Total EU finished steel imports in January-February amounted to 3,074,000 mt, up 36.44 percent year on year.
