Egypt, Turkey close to FTA

Speaking at the Turkey-Egypt Business Council Cooperation Meeting held in Turkey, Turkish State Minister Kursad Tuzmen said that the talks he held with Egyptian Minister of Foreign Trade and Industry Rasheed Mohamed Rasheed were productive and that the two countries had agreed to sign a Free Trade Agreement in Egypt by June. Turkish State Minister Tuzmen indicated that the two countries were already cooperating in the textile and clothing sectors. He expressed his hope that these efforts would also spread to other branches of industry. Rasheed signaled that Egypt was ready to work together with Turkey to expand their cooperation in the areas of textiles, industry and technology. He added that the annual trade volume between the two countries could explode to more than $2 billion in the near future. The trade volume between the two countries in 2004 was $750 million.
