Domestic steel production increases

Steel production in the United States has increased from the week ended October 15 to the week ended October 22, according to data released Monday by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Domestic steelmakers produced about 2.010 million net tons (2.220 million metric tons) for the week ended October 22, according to AISI's data. That was up about 0.1 percent from the 2.008 million net tons (2.210 million metric tons) produced for the week ending Oct. 15. Year-to-date production, as of Oct. 22, was about 83.6 million net tons (92.1 million metric tons), down 6.1 percent from 89.1 million net tons (98.2 million metric tons) for the same period a year ago. AISI is a Washington, D.C.- based nonprofit organization of North American companies involved in the iron and steel industry. AISI's data is based on reports from companies representing about 90 percent of the domestic industry's raw steel capacity.
