Coal exports from Australia’s Newcastle port increase

In the week ended September 16, coal shipments from the Port of Newcastle in Queensland, the coal producing state of Australia, totaled 3.01 million mt, according to Newcastle Port Corporation. The figure constitutes an increase of 27.3 percent compared to the previous week ended September 9, in which a week-on-week decrease of 30 percent in coal shipments had been observed.

In the September 1-16 period, Newcastle port exported 5.95 million mt of thermal and coking coal, while the port authority has forecast that Newcastle port will ship a total of 12.45 million mt for the whole of September.

Anglo American, Peabody Energy, Rio Tinto and Xstrata are some of the larger exporters to ship coal from Newcastle port.
