In the week ended July 8, coal shipments from the Port of Newcastle in Queensland, the coal producing state of Australia, totaled 2.97 million mt, according to Newcastle Port Corporation. The figure constitutes an increase of 27.5 percent compared to the previous week ended July 1, in which a week-on-week decrease of 24.8 percent in coal shipments had been observed.
In the period of July 1-8, Newcastle port exported 3.1 million mt of thermal and coking coal, while the port authority forecasts that Newcastle port will ship a total of 12.8 million mt for the whole of July. In July 2012, Newcastle port had exported almost 12.3 million mt of thermal and coking coal.
Anglo American, Peabody Energy, Rio Tinto and Xstrata are some of the larger exporters to ship coal from Newcastle port.
