Coal exports from Australia’s Newcastle port decrease

In the week ended April 22, coal shipments from the Port of Newcastle in Queensland, the coal producing state of Australia, totaled 2.4 million mt, according to Newcastle Port Corporation. The figure constitutes a decrease of 20.9 percent compared to the previous week ended April 15, in which a week-on-week increase of 20.9 percent in coal shipments had been observed.

In the period of April 1-22, Newcastle port exported 8.1 million mt of thermal and coking coal, while the port authority forecasts that Newcastle port will ship a total of 12.8 million mt for the whole of April. In April 2012, Newcastle port exported almost 11.7 million mt of thermal and coking coal.

Anglo American, Peabody Energy, Rio Tinto and Xstrata are some of the larger exporters to ship coal from Newcastle port.
