Germany-based plantmaker SMS Siemag has announced that it will modernize the 1,800 mm steckel mill of Chinese steelmaker Shandong Taishan Steel Group Co. as part of a capacity increase.

With this modernization project, Shandong Taishan aims to increase its hot wide strip output capacity at its Laiwu location and extend the product range towards higher grades.
The steckel mill has a current capacity of 600,000 mt per year. The modernization project will pave the way for the planned capacity increase to 1,800,000 mt per year. The steckel mill is used to produce hot rolled stainless and carbon steel strips for the automotive, shipbuilding and household appliance industries.

Shandong Taishan Steel Group operates several hot and cold rolling mills in China, which produce strip and sheet in stainless and carbon steel grades.
