As stated by the China Coking Industry Association, China's total metallurgical coke demand will probably reach 370-380 million mt in 2010, based on the industry expectation of 10 percent growth in China's crude steel production in 2010 as well as the current steel production situation. In 2009, China had produced 353 million mt of coke, registering a year-on-year increase of 7.95 percent.

In 2009, China's outputs of crude steel and pig iron respectively reached 568.03 million mt and 543.75 million mt, increasing by 12.9 percent and 15.9 percent from 2008. The increases in question significantly drove up domestic demand for coke products. For the whole of the year, China's apparent coke consumption increased to 352.6 million mt, up 37 million mt or 11.78 percent compared to the 2008 volume.
