China’s coal imports jump nearly 60%

High demand for energy saw China's coal imports rise 59% to reach an estimated 10 million tons in the first five months of 2005, suggests data from Chinese customs. China imported 2.4 million tons of coal in May 2005 alone, nearly double what the country had imported the previous May. An increased demand for power over the summer months should see the country's coal imports continue to rise.
