The Port of Los Angeles, California announced Tuesday that Shanghai-based China Shipping has completed a major phase of its terminal expansion project at the Port of Los Angeles. The $47.6 million completed phase includes a 925-foot (282 meters) section of the wharf, 18 additional acres of backland as well as four container cranes that will increase cargo throughput.
"We take great pride in the growth and success we've experienced at the Port of Los Angeles," said China Shipping Chairman Li Shaode. "The completion of this critical phase allows for the berthing of two ships simultaneously and positively positions China Shipping and the Port for considerable growth opportunities."
With the completion of this phase, China Shipping's West Basin Container Terminal at the Port of Los Angeles now has 2,125 feet (647.7 meters) of wharf space and eight super post-Panamax cranes. Over the next three years, China Shipping will add 375 feet (114.3 meters) of additional wharf space and more backland that will double the size of China Shipping to 142 acres. Pending the completion of all its expansion phases, China Shipping will increase container terminal capacity to accommodate 1.5 million TEU's annually.
