Reconstruction costs to repair Chile's damaged infrastructure and industrial projects, caused by separate earthquakes on February 27 and March 11, are estimated to be in the tens of billions of dollars.

In addition to flattening buildings and destroying bridges and roads, the earthquakes forced iron ore producer Compania Aceros del Pacifico to close its Huachipato steel unit, which will likely resume operations in approximately three months.
