Canadian freight rail traffic up 3.2 percent in February

Statistics Canada reported Wednesday that rail freight traffic carried by Canadian railways rose to 22.5 million metric tons (mt) in February, a 3.2 percent increase over February 2010.

Rail freight traffic destined for or passing through Canada from rail carriers operating in the US increased 16.9 percent from February 2010 to 2.5 million mt in February. The gain occurred on the strength of non-intermodal shipments, which rose 18.5 percent to 2.4 million mt.
