Canada’s rail traffic increases 4.1 percent in June

Statistics Canada reported Wednesday that total freight rail traffic originating in Canada and received from the US reached a combined 25.3 million metric tons (mt) in June, a 4.1 percent increase from June 2010.

Non-intermodal freight loadings represented the majority of the total domestic cargo loaded in June with 20.2 million mt up 4.1 perncet from June 2010. Intermodal freight loadings fell 0.9 percent from June 2010 to 2.3 million mt in June. The decline was a result of decreases in both containers and trailers loaded on flat cars.

Rail traffic received from the US in June was up 9 percent year-on-year to 2.8 million mt.
