Brazilian steel export volume down 17.5 percent in 2013

According to the Brazil Steel Institute (IABr), Brazilian crude steel production in 2013 amounted to 34.18 million metric tons, one percent lower year on year. In the same year, Brazilian rolled steel output increased by 2.2 percent to 26.26 million metric tons, including 14.99 million metric tons of flat products - up 0.6 percent, and 11.27 million metric tons of long products - up 4.4 percent, all on year-on-year basis.
 
Meanwhile, Brazilian steelmakers produced 2.66 million metric tons of crude steel in December last year, down 1.93 percent from November and up four percent year on year. Brazil's rolled steel product output totaled 2.02 million mt in December, decreasing by 7.9 percent month on month and up 5.9 percent year on year. Of this total, the country's flat steel output stood at 1.28 million mt, increasing by 5.52 month on month and up 3.6 percent year on year, while Brazil's long steel output amounted to 740,400 metric tons, decreasing by 24.51 percent month on month and up 10 percent compared to December 2012.

Brazil's exports of steel products in December last year amounted to 599,600 metric tons, decreasing by 21 percent, and worth US$423.70 million, down 13.9 percent, both compared to December 2012. Steel product exports in 2013 totaled 8.09 million mt, worth US$5.57 billion, with decreases of 17.5 percent in volume and 20.7 percent in value compared to 2012.
