Brazilian court denies IABr request to block Turkish rebar imports

A Brazilian court has determined that Turkish rebar exports to Brazil though a Brazilian distributor should not be prevented, it announced Tuesday.

Following a request from Brazil’s steel institute, IABr, that said Turkish rebar imports weren’t of proper quality to be used domestically, the federal justice of Santa Catarina state (TJSC), in the Brazilian southern region, has determined that a local distribution company could continue selling imported rebar from Turkey.

“The duty to monitor the quality and to prevent the entry and the sale of improper foreign merchandise in Brazil is a Inmetro’s [Brazil's industrial standards regulator INMETRO] only duty,” the court said in its decision.
