Booming exports strengthen Hyundai’s bottom line

South Korea's largest automaker, Hyundai Motor Co., disclosed that it realized a 19% year on year increase in car sales during March 2005. The company sold 220'784 cars during the month. Domestic sales increased a slight 0.8% to 45'742 units, while exports soared 25% year on year to 175'042 units. Month on month, domestic and export sales respectively showed gains of 34% and 33% from February. The Lunar New Year holiday had a great effect on February's seemingly low numbers. Hyundai sold 637'125 units in the first quarter of 2005, a 30% year-on-year increase. The company sold 119'189 units in the domestic market, a 6.4% decrease from Q1 2004. On the other hand, exports skyrocketed 42% to 517'936 units.
