BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), a joint venture of Australian miner BHP Billiton and Japan's Mitsubishi, has announced that it plans to cease production at its Norwich Park coal mine in Queensland indefinitely.

According to the statement, the coal mine has been losing money for several months, due to lower production, a significant increase in costs and lower coal prices, while recent strikes also had an impact on production

Focusing on the mine's longer-term future, the company will now seek measures to enable Norwich Park to operate as a sustainably profitable, low-cost mine.
