BHP Billiton not to resume operations at Nickel West due to safety reasons

Australia-based miner BHP Billiton has announced that it is unable to safely resume operations at its Nickel West Leinster Perseverance Underground Mine in Western Australia, following the assessment launched after the seismic event on October 31, 2013, which resulted in the suspension of production. The decision to cease operations in the sublevel cave at Perseverance mine will lead to a reduction in the operational workforce at Leinster.
 
According to BHP, Nickel West will continue to operate its processing facilities at Leinster, along with its other operations in Western Australia, and will continue to maintain the underground infrastructure at Perseverance mine.
 
In addition, mining will resume at Rocky's Reward open cut mine, near Leinster, to provide an alternative nickel ore supply to the company's integrated business.
