AvestaPolarit investing €100 million for Tornio Works

Investments for environmental protection measures related to the expansion plans of the Finnish steel maker AvestaPolarit's Tornio Works, which will be carried out through 2000-2004, will total over €100 million, about one-tenth of the planned overall investment. As previously announced by SteelOrbis, by end of last month AvestaPolarit put its first melting shop in Tornio in maintenance process aiming to reduce dust emissions and emissions to water not only from the meltshop, but also from the Tornio Works through environmental investments. It is anticipated that this investment conducted with the maintenance process, scheduled to be completed in 2004, will reduce current dust emission levels by over 30% from the Tornio Works at the cost of €19 million. Together with these environmental investments, as cited above, an increase more than double is intended in steel production as well as a reduction in the environmental impact of facilities. As a matter of fact, as a consequence of these investments, since the end of 1990's emissions to water has considerably decreased when compared to previous levels.
