Argentina's Metal Workers Union (UOM) has announced it will stage a one-day strike beginning on Friday, April 8 in response to their inability to reach an agreement with the labor ministry with regard to the UOM's demand for a 25 percent "salary adjustment".

"The metallurgical sector has shown its reluctant attitude by once again delaying joint negotiations. For a year they knew  that they would need to negotiate new salary scales in March, but continued to show up to meetings with unreasonable offers, that didn't even merit consideration,"  states the UOM's website.

"We have followed legal paths and have attended all scheduled hearings, only to be mocked by company representatives.  They have no credible arguments, only postponement requests, pretending that the issue of wages was a new or unfamiliar topic. Such cynicism is unacceptable, and metalworkers will allow no delays."

The strike will affect both Ternium-owned Siderar, Argentina's largest steel company; and ArcelorMittal-owned Acindar, the nation's largest longs producer.
