Argentinian steelmaker Tenaris Siderca, from the Techint group, has reached this week an agreement with a local union to extend the temporary layoffs it had already applied for the workers of its Campana plant for two more months as a way to avoid job cuts.

According to media reports, the nation’s Metal Workers Union (UOM) agreed to allow the Campana workers to join a voluntary, provisional layoff program, which will last two months. Media reports said the workers who join the program will receive 80 percent of their regular wages, plus their additional benefits.

In August this year, Siderca temporarily laid off 3,000 workers at its Campana plant, which at the time had about 5,000 employees. Since then, the workers were receiving about 85 percent of their wages.

Siderca is reportedly to be operating at 30 percent its capacity.
