ArcelorMittal announced that its subsidiary, ArcelorMittal Tailored Blanks, will open an $83.5 million facility in Detroit to produce high-strength steel laser welded blanks for the auto industry. The company received a $2 million performance grant from the Michigan Business Development Program.

The 317,000-square-foot building will mark the first plant in the state for the company, which did not indicate when the facility is expected to open.

ArcelorMittal has two other tailored blank facilities, in Pioneer, Ohio and in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

According to the company, tailor welded blanks offer “substantial potential for vehicle safety improvement and weight savings while reducing overall production costs.”
