Global steel giant ArcelorMittal has announced that it supplies high strength steel for Volkswagen's new generation lighter vehicles. The company stated that, despite their lower gauges, high strength steels offer the same or better performance for cars than conventional steels in terms of mechanical behavior. ArcelorMittal added that the use of ultra high strength steels in the bodyshell of Volkswagen's new model not only makes the vehicle lighter but also makes it safer and more fuel-efficient.

In the ArcelorMittal release, Cees ten Broek, director of the WorldAutoSteel association, commented, "Volkswagen's use of advanced steel technologies is a great example of how this transformational material can help automotive companies to create the lightweight vehicle of the future".
