Global news reports Wednesday indicated that steelmaking giant ArcelorMittal submitted a bid to purchase ThyssenKrupp AG's Calvert, Alabama flat rolled mill. The reports cited ArcelorMittal CFO Aditya Mittal during a conference call Wednesday, when he said that the mill is "clearly a world class asset in terms of quality and capability."

The company did not comment, however, on whether it bid for the Alabama and Brazilian operations as well or just the Calvert mill. During the conference, Mittal suggested that ArcelorMittal is already capable of supplying slabs to Alabama from its US, Brazilian, and Mexican steelmaking operations.
