Following the request of the Mexican Workers Transporters Confederation Regional Union (CROM) and the Confederation of Workers of Mexico (CTM), ArcelorMittal Mexico completed the process of reviewing the rates and contract terms for mineral material hauling.

The company said in a statement to local media that after a thorough analysis, it found that the current fare paid (up to 24 percent) exceeds the cost of service in comparative terms with other localities and suppliers of Lázaro Cárdenas. To ensure long-term viability of the steel plant--which represents a major economic engine for more than 8,400 families directly and 4,000 indirectly--the company is constantly looking for spaces to improve efficiency and competitiveness.

However, members of transport unions warned that ArcelorMittal has "used their own criteria" to determine the cost of the services they provide, and no formal criteria for official standards exists, and thus there can be no point of agreement in the current negotiations.
