According to media reports today, ArcelorMittal Dofasco has received $40 million in Canadian government grants and incentives for energy upgrades.

The technology upgrades will involve surplus steam and steam converted from waste gases that will generate 170,000 MWh of annual electricity savings when fully operational, the company told local media.

A portion of the incentives will go toward the company’s $112 million Utilities Boiler and Power Generation project, the second initiative in the company’s energy plan that’s expected to go into operation at the end of 2018. The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), which monitors and co-ordinates Ontario's power supply, will provide $30 million in incentives.

In April, the company’s first initiative, the $15 million Turbo Generator 2 project, went in service after receiving a $10-million grant from the Industrial Accelerator Program.
