On September 8, Australian mining giant BHP Billiton and Luxembourg-based steel giant ArcelorMittal jointly announced that they have ended discussions to combine the two companies' iron ore interests in West African countries of Liberia and Guinea into a single joint venture.

The companies were unable to reach a commercial agreement, the statement said.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, in January this year BHP Billiton and ArcelorMittal entered into initial discussions on the potential combination of their respective iron ore mining and infrastructure interests in these countries.
