In yet another downsizing move, US Steel announced Tuesday that 1,604 workers at its Fairfield operation could be laid off in March: up to 386 workers at Fairfield Tubular Operations and up to 1,218 at Fairfield Works, the flat-roll supplier to the tubular plant, which comprises nearly three quarters of the total number of employees.

The company cited weak market conditions, fluctuating oil prices and unfair trade practices as reasons behind the move.
