Alpha Natural Resources posts net loss for Q2

Virginia, US-based metallurgical coal producer Alpha Natural Resources has issued its financial results for the second quarter of 2012.

According to the financial results, the company has reported a net loss of $2.2 billion in the given quarter compared to a net loss of $50 million in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Coal sales revenues in the second quarter of 2012 saw an increase of 11 percent year on year, rising to $1.56 billion.

In the first half of the year, Alpha registered a net loss of $2.3 billion, while its revenues from coal sales increased by 33.3 percent year on year to $3.2 billion.

During the second quarter, Alpha shipped 26.8 million mt of coal, up 16.5 percent, while the company's first half coal shipments reached 54.9 million mt, increasing by 24.7 percent, both year on year.

In 2012, Alpha anticipates total shipment volumes of 100-115 million metric tons, including 20-23 million metric tons of Eastern metallurgical coal, 38-44 million metric tons of Eastern steam coal, and 42-48 million metric tons of Western steam coal.
