During the semi-annual meeting of the board of directors of the Latin American Steel Association (Alacero) held on Tuesday, May 13 in Bogotá, Colombia, the growth of Latin America as a preferred destination for Chinese and Turkish exports of steel was discussed.

At the meeting, Alacero stated that in 2013 Latin America accounted for less than five percent of global finished steel consumption, using about 67 million metric tons. However, Latin American was the destination for nine percent of total Turkish finished steel exports and 10 percent of Chinese finished steel exports in the given year. Alacero, which has been monitoring trade flows between Latin America and China of raw materials, finished steel and indirect trade of steel for several years, has now commenced a similar monitoring of trade flows with Turkey. Accordingly, last year Turkey exported 1.26 million metric tons of steel to the region, mostly consisting of long products used in construction. Turkey supplied 20 percent of Latin America's imports of long products in 2013. Meanwhile, during the last six years, between 2008 and 2013 inclusive, Chinese finished steel exports rose by just 5.2 percent year on year, while Chinese finished steel exports to Latin America more than doubled, increasing from 2.6 million metric tons in 2008 to 5.7 million metric tons in 2013.

The board of Alacero pledged to continue to carry out follow-up of antidumping measures and commercial safeguards in the region, to collaborate with its associates providing information about the actions being taken by countries, and to cooperate to reinforce the message to governments to confront unfair trade.

Alacero announced that these issues will be among the topics which will be discussed during the Alacero meeting which will take place in Mexico City on November 9-11 this year.
