Mexican steelmaker Altos Hornos de México (AHMSA) agreed to work in coordination with the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) to effectively comply with Environmental Law.

Through the National Environmental Audit Program developed by PROFEPA, AHMSA began five operational areas of the environmental certification process known as "Clean Industry".

The environmental audit will be performed in the operational departments of the Cold Rolling Mill, Power Plants, Railway Transport, and recovery areas of ferrous material and the new line of Steckel plate.

In a statement, Profepa explained that its program encourages domestic enterprises to participate in a voluntary review system that allows them to know their level of compliance with environmental regulations and improve the efficiency of their production processes and competitiveness.

"It's very satisfying to work with AHMSA in the certification program as a clean industry, since it is a leading international company that has been concerned with processes friendly to the environment; we hope their example will be followed by many other industries in the state and nationally," said Raul Gonzalez, Profepa’s functionary.

"Getting this award will strengthen the effort for years has been applied to operate environmental protection systems, as reflected in the international certificate ISO: 14001, which was obtained for the first time in 1995 and has strengthened in each of the areas," Raymundo de la Cruz, manager of Hygiene and Ecology of AHMSA said.

The audit will end on July 11 and will be developed by Adferi Environmental Consultants, which conducted a methodological review of the production processes, reviewing compliance with the applicable regulations of international standards and good operating practices and engineering based on the Mexican Environmental Standard.
